The Class of 1980 – 1985

By Maria Haughey

The hill it seemed steep on the very first day,
A mountain of blue with some speckles of grey.
Our school bags were heavy, our nerves they were shot,
For we didn’t know if we’d like it or not.

We stood in Assembly, lined up in our places,
And gazed round in awe at the sea of strange faces.
We looked at the sixth years, to our right where they posed,
And thought that we’d never appear so composed.

We stood and we fumbled with our socks or our tie.
And smiled rather nervously if someone caught our eye.
On the stage stood the principal who appeared to be fair,
With her heels on the wood and her toes in fresh air.

She smiled down at us and that smile seemed to say,
“We’re in this together, it is too my first day.”
On that Monday morning, we were thirty four,
And got placed in a classroom on the ground floor.

There was Enda and Brendan and Darragh and Paul,
There was Kevin and Tony but that is not all.
There was Fergus and Tommy and for one year,
There was Michael McDonagh who now serves us beer.

There was Cathy and Dearbhla, Edel and Cora,
There was Elaine and Yvonne, Maura and Nora.
Two Mary’s, two Marie’s and one Bernadette,
Who left after first year, along with Janette.

A Jacqui, a Jackie, Deirdre and Cristín.
Helena, Fiona, Caroline and Noreen,
There was Monica, Geraldine and a Maria.
All twelve or thirteen and with no idea.

That five years would go past in the blink of an eye,
That we’d excel in some things and in others, get by.
That fifteen of our number would not stay the course,
Go boarding, repeating, change schools or worse.

That we’d gather seven as the years passed,
Seven to be welcomed into the class.
There was Michael and Úna, Deirdre and Lizzy.
Monica, Carmel and another Mary.

We knew that we’d learn and we might have to work,
At Maths – Mr Lannon or Bus Org – Mrs Burke.
Gaeilge – Miss O’Malley who left to get wed,
And so Mr Kelly took her class instead.

Sr Alvarez in history caused us great mirth,
“The very word Renaissance means rebirth.”
We did Art with Miss Stewart and learned proper speech,
On Fridays when Mrs Watson came in to teach.

Shakespeare we read and o’er Yeats we despaired,
When he didn’t come up and we all were prepared.
By Mrs Collins and Walsh – who’d more strings to their bow,
And involved us in plays and had us at hello.

We studied religion with Fr Frank G,
Who couldn’t put up with legs crossed at the knee.
He told us to sit straight and we listened well,
To his wisdom and knowledge and the stories he’d tell.

We recall Sr Margaret and her science brain,
And PE in the hall cause there always was rain.
Sr Fanchea taught us how to parle Francais,
We remember those classes to this very day.

We learned how to cook in a class called Home Ec.,
Whilst the girls did the sewing, the boys they did Tech.
Mrs Hester and Kelly were in charge of the baking,
And if we never got good, that was not of their making.

Sr Catherine did music and prayed we could sing,
But music and singing wasn’t everyone’s thing.
Mr Loftus was bearded and often wore tweed,
“You did sir,” we’d tell him when quotes he did read.

Mr Corry took Maths class and suffered delirium,
When we couldn’t work out the most simple theorem.
There was Physics and Chemistry with the bubbly Miss Kelly,
And down in the lab we would talk about telly.

We remember the prefab with a map of the Rhine,
Mrs Howley’s geography class – guaranteed a good time.
We remember the nuns who would smile as we pass,
Not only the ones we encountered in class.

We remember old Jimmy in his gardening gear,
And him working outdoors all the days of the year.
We remember it all like it were yesterday,
Though decades have passed since that very first day.

When we stood in the hall and looked up at the stage,
With our futures unwritten, our lives a blank page.
We have filled that page since with some interesting content,
But the prologue was written in the Marist Convent.
